BOOYAH Bait Company, a PRADCO-Fishing holding, is a new Official Supporting Sponsor of the Bassmaster Elite Series, the B.A.S.S. Federation Nation and the three-division Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Open, all B.A.S.S.-owned tournament circuits.

“We are extremely pleased to welcome BOOYAH aboard as we move into the 2012 Bassmaster competition season,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “BOOYAH is a brand that resonates with so many anglers, from Federation Nation members to the seasoned pros on the Elite Series.”

BOOYAH is a sponsor of several anglers at the top levels of competitive bass fishing.

“Many of our Elite pros, such as Alton Jones, Tim Horton, Edwin Evers and Terry Scroggins, are involved with BOOYAH product development, along with fishing legends such as Bill Dance, Jimmy Houston and Bobby Murray,” said Bruce Stanton, vice president and general manager of PRADCO-Fishing/BOOYAH Bait Company.

The new sponsor agreement continues a BOOYAH-B.A.S.S. relationship that began years ago. The companies have partnered in promotions, and BOOYAH was the Official Wirebait Sponsor of B.A.S.S. in 2009.

“BOOYAH has been elevated to a premier national brand of spinnerbaits, jigs and buzzbaits over the past few years in the bass tournament community,” Stanton said. “We feel the B.A.S.S. members are without a doubt one of our most important consumer groups, and we are glad to be supporting the anglers and the organization with a sponsorship again.”

Established in 2005 by PRADCO-Fishing, BOOYAH Bait Company quickly became known for its high-quality spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and jigs. A prototype of the BOOYAH A-Jig helped Alton Jones to victory in the 2008 Bassmaster Classic on Lake Hartwell. Other popular models include the premium BOOYAH Buzz, a best-selling red-eyed buzzbait, and the Big Show Finesse Head Jig, a jighead designed by Scroggins for light-line applications. The introduction of one of BOOYAH’s newest lures, the Pad Crasher, is a leader in the hollow-body frog craze.

BOOYAH operates under the umbrella of PRADCO-Fishing, which also owns legendary companies such as Heddon Lures, Cotton Cordell, YUM Soft Plastics, Bomber, XCalibur and Rebel Lures, which will mark its 50th anniversary in 2012. The anniversary celebration began with the launch of a sweepstakes that will award a Rebel-wrapped Skeeter boat during the 2012 Bassmaster Classic.

The 2012 tournament season will mark Rapala’s third consecutive as an official FLW sponsor. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Rapala’s quality products are well known within the fishing industry. In fact, Rapala lures have accounted for more world-record catches than any other lure. In addition to lures, Rapala manufactures and markets fillet knives, scales, and other various fishing tools. Prominent Rapala brands include Sufix fishing line, VMC hooks and Trigger X soft plastics. Rapala has long operated under the philosophy “that which is irresistible to fish will always be irresistible to the fisherman.”

Kathy Fennel, President of FLW Operations Division, stated: “Rapala is a legendary player in our industry; so many of our anglers and fans grew up catching bass and walleyes on Rapala lures. And these same lures continue to win tournaments at the sport’s highest levels – the Walmart FLW Tour and the National Guard FLW Walleye Tour. We’re extremely proud to continue our partnership with Rapala.”

As part of the agreement, Rapala will receive exposure across all platforms of FLW, including its tournaments, websites, magazines and weekly television show. Rapala will also have the opportunity to display their products and provide promotional offers to fans at the FLW Expo.

"Tournament angling has become a widely popular sport among anglers of all ages," said Tom Mackin, president of Rapala USA. "FLW is one of the most recognizable tournament organizations in both bass and walleye fishing and not only provides anglers, but fans, with an exciting competition. We are thrilled to continue our sponsorship and support the anglers."

Rapala’s esteemed pro staff includes FLW Tour pros Terry Bolton, Dave Lefebre and Jacob Wheeler as well as FLW Walleye Tour pro Chris Gilman. In May, the company launched their newest product, the Rippin’ Rap, a lipless, vibrating crankbait than can be fished deep or shallow.

Rapala has been the world’s favorite fishing lure since 1936. Rapala lures are trusted by fishermen in more than 140 countries worldwide. Rapala’s reputation stems from a towering list of world records, the knowledge of pro staff, affiliation with the top brands in the industry and a history of unwavering dedication to the highest quality.

How Nick Saban coached Jamie Horton to victory: Jamie Horton, the reigning B.A.S.S. Federation Nation champion as of last Saturday, contends that the coaching of Nick Saban changed his luck and life.

“Saban always preaches to not look at your goal, but at what you have to do to get there,” said Horton, 44, who lives in Centreville, Ala., not far from the Tide’s Tuscaloosa home. “He explained the difference between spending time and investing time to reach a goal.”

“I took that and went with it. I focused on doing the best I could, to my ability, on the water. Not on the outcome, or on the reward, but on what I could control. You can’t be like that on everything. You have to pick out something special, something you want really, really bad.” Horton said.

Like being the Federation Nation champion. Like qualifying again for the Bassmaster Classic, getting another chance after his first time out in Classic 2002.

Like losing weight. Horton decided the first thing he could control was excess poundage. He weighed 307.

“That was back in November (2010). I decided that if I could lose 30 pounds before the Southern Divisional in April, then I’d feel good about myself and I would fish better. Then I said that if I could lose 30 more pounds by The Nationals, then I felt like I could win it.”

He cut back his food intake. Even though Horton was not a morning person, he forced himself to exercise at 5 a.m. each morning to condition himself for tournaments. He exceeded his April goal, dropping 35 pounds before his Southern Divisional and qualifying to move on to the championship. By the beginning of November, he had lost a total of 82 pounds.

“I was so driven. I had no problem passing on the sweet tea or the candy or whatever. I knew I only had to do it for eight months to reach my goal. And I remembered that losing weight was what I could do, what I could control, to make myself better.”

He rolled with that success onto the water. Saturday’s victory on the Ouachita River, proved his determination paid off. And also served as a slice of redemption from 2007, when he led a national championship tournament for two days, but lost the event.

“I was focused on the prize, not on what I had to do. Later, when I heard Saban talk about focusing on the moment, I knew what I had done wrong,” Horton said. “This (Federation Nation win) settles that score with me.”

Horton is eager to scout the Red River, the 2012 Classic fishery. Unlike in the 2002 Classic, when Lay Lake was a new fishery to him, Horton has solid Red River experience. He wants to check out the river and how it’s changed.

But first things first: Monday morning, Horton was in a tree stand in Kansas. He had flown directly from the tournament site in Monroe, La., to Kansas to meet his brother and father for their annual bow hunting trip.

He said he passed on a buck early in the day.

“I chose to wait on a bigger one,” he said. “I have been pretty lucky lately.”

And then there was one: With six B.A.S.S. Federation Nation qualifiers determined last Saturday, there’s only one seat left on the bus to the 2012 Bassmaster Classic.

The six most recent Classic qualifiers came from the Nov. 3-5 B.A.S.S. Federation Nation Championship presented by Yamaha and Skeeter Boats: Overall champ and Southern Division winner Jamie Horton of Centreville, Ala.; Josh Polfer of Nampa, Idaho, Western Division; Matt McCoy, Indianapolis, Ind., Northern Division; Chris Price, Church Hill, Md., Mid-Atlantic Division; John Diaco, Rochester, N.H., Eastern Division; and Tom Jessop, Dalhart, Texas, Central Division.

The last seat will be filled Nov. 12 by the winner of the 2011 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series Championship presented by American Bass Anglers. The event will begin Wednesday, Nov. 9 on South Carolina’s Santee Cooper Reservoir.

Made up by lakes Marion and Moultrie, vast Santee Cooper covers more than 110,000 acres at full pool. Water levels, however, are reportedly far below normal, and some productive backwater areas are high and dry.

Shane Williams wants to go home to the Classic: When the 2012 Bassmaster Classic comes to Shreveport-Bossier City, La., in February, angler Shane Williams will be there, just like he was in 2009 when the Classic last came to his home waters of the Red River.

This time, instead of watching Classic pros on the Red, Williams wants to be one of them.

“The Classic is every fisherman’s dream. But to be in it at home …” Williams said needs no further explanation.

Williams found four chances to qualify. Three were by entering the 2011 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open, the B.A.S.S. circuit that offers Classic seats to each of three event winners. Williams did well for an Open rookie — he ranked 45th in points among 181 Central Open anglers — but only winners get Classic seats through the Opens.

This week Williams will make his fourth and final attempt of 2011. To succeed, he has to beat about 200 other anglers on the South Carolina impoundment of Santee Cooper in the Nov. 9-12 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series Championship presented by American Bass Anglers.

Just like in a Bassmaster Open event, only the Weekend Series champ will get his ticket punched for the Feb. 24-26 Classic.

Williams, 31, competed for years in various circuits before he stepped up into the 2011 Opens. A Weekend Series angler since 2006, he qualified for the circuit’s 2009 and 2010 championships.

Although he has experience in the format, he’s never competed on Santee Cooper. That doesn’t worry him too much; the shallow-water, cypress-tree setup of Santee Cooper gives him confidence.

“A lot of the lakes in northwest Louisiana are the same kind of lake,” said Williams, who lives just south of Shreveport in Keithville, La.

Williams isn’t the only angler in the Weekend Series Championship who calls the Red River home water. He said he knows at least six other anglers with his same incentive: to fish a Classic that’s on home water.

“That’s what we’re going for,” he said.

Quotes from Bassmaster Classic Qualifiers through the Federation Nation:

“For the last, probably, 48 hours, I’ve felt like the man in the ninth inning with two outs. The adrenaline and the butterflies going through my belly are unbelievable.” — Chris Price, Classic qualifier from the Mid-Atlantic Division

“The last time (2002) I was there … I was in shock still ... I didn’t even know I was fishing. I was just looking around, just kind of casting, ‘I’m in the Classic, I’m in the Classic.’ This time I’m going to catch some.” — Chris Price after qualifying for his second Classic

“Thankful and tired and grateful.” — Tom Jessop describing how he felt after winning a Classic spot by overtaking two-day leader Jared Miller in the Central Division

“It’s a dream come true — I mean, what’s a guy say?” — Josh Polfer, Classic qualifier by taking first place in the Western Division, the second in a row from Idaho.

SENECA, S.C. (Oct. 26, 2011) – The Walmart Bass Fishing League is headed to Lake Hartwell Nov. 3-5 for one of six regional championships. This three-day tournament features the top 40 boaters and 40 co-anglers from each of the Choo Choo, Gator, North Carolina and Shenandoah divisions. They will compete for a Ranger 198VX with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and a Chevy 1500 Silverado in the Boater Division and a new Ranger 198VX with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard in the Co-angler Division.

“The weather has been good, and the water temperatures are trending down,” said Chevy pro Anthony Gagliardi of Prosperity, S.C. “The shad have started their migration into the backs of creeks, so the key is going to be finding bass that are feeding and following the shad into the tributaries.

“I would start with a topwater bait early,” continued Gagliardi. “I like to throw a Pop-R in the fall if the bass aren’t actively schooling. Shad-related patterns are going to work best – crankbaits, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits.

“Schooling is definitely going to play a role in this tournament,” Gagliardi went on to say. “The bass are going to be grouping in like sizes, so the key is going to be finding the right size school of fish, one that has 3- to 4-pounders in it. It is going to take about 15 pounds per day to win, maybe 45 pounds total. There should be a lot of fish caught, but I don’t think you’ll see any huge stringers.”

Takeoffs will be at Clemson Beach and Recreation Area located at 275 YMCA Circle in Seneca, S.C., at 7:45 a.m. daily. Thursday and Friday’s weigh-ins will be at the marina beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday’s final weigh-in is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Shaver Center located at 698 W. South 4th St. in Seneca. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 120 tournaments throughout the season, five in each division. The top 40 boaters and 40 co-anglers from each division have now qualified for regional tournaments and are competing to finish in the top six, which will then qualify them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the Walmart BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the EverStart Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.

Martin Wins Co-Angler Title, $20,000

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (Oct 22, 2011) – Pro Paul Elias of Laurel, Miss., endured a 1-hour, 45-minute fog delay Saturday morning and caught a five-bass limit weighing 24 pounds, 5 ounces to continue his domination of the field at the Walmart FLW Tour on Lake Guntersville presented by Mercury and advance to the top 10 as the crucial No. 1 seed. With a three-day catch of 15 bass weighing 79-8, he now holds a 14-pound, 9-ounce lead in the tournament going into the final day of competition.

“This is one awesome lake,” Elias said. “I’ve had some great Octobers on this lake.”

Elias said he relied on the Alabama Rig again on the third day of competition to land another massive Guntersville limit of bass.

“This rig I’m throwing is crazy,” Elias said. “A lot more guys were throwing it today than were the first two days. It’s obvious by the weights. A bait comes along every now and then and it just makes a lot of sense, and this is just one of those kinds of baits.”

The Alabama rig consists of a hard-bait body that trails four or five wires that have a swivel attached to the end of each wire. Fishermen then tie a variety of baits – swimbaits, grubs or a variety of other artificial baits – to the swivels. The baits fan out and are retrieved and mimic a school of baitfish. Elias said he has been fishing the rig in deep water for suspended fish and has eight spots he wanted to target during the tournament. He’s hit five of those spots during the first three days of competition.

“I’ve tried other stuff, but it just wasn’t working,” Elias said. “I think I can catch another good bag tomorrow. I’ll feel comfortable with 15 or 16 pounds. But I feel like if I catch another limit the way I’ve been fishing I’ll catch another 20-plus-pound bag.”

Pro Robert Behrle of Hoover, Ala., advanced to the final round of 10 pros in the No. 2 spot with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 64-15.

Rounding out the top 10 pros and advancing to the final day of competition are:

Overall there were 77 bass weighing 265 pounds, 12 ounces caught by pros Saturday. The catch included 12 five-bass limits.

Pros are competing for a top award of up to $125,000 this week plus valuable points in the hope of qualifying for the 2012 Forrest Wood Cup presented by Walmart, the world championship of bass fishing. The top five anglers in the point standings from the four FLW Tour Open tournaments will qualify.

Casey Martin of New Market, Ala., won the Co-angler Division, his second FLW Tour event in a row, and $20,000 Saturday with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 47 pounds, 6 ounces followed by Marc Marsh of Prosperity, S.C., in second place with nine bass weighing 32-6 worth $7,291.

“That Alabama Rig is the way to go,” said Martin, who also won the FLW Tour event on Lake Champlain in September. “I had three fish pretty early and I threw that Alabama Rig in there, and it’s got five swimbaits on it. I set the hook and came back with two fish that weighed about three pounds each and another swimbait was missing. I don’t know how big the big one was that got off.”

Martin said he flipped matted grass the first two days of competition, but the Alabama Rig boosted him to victory on Saturday.

“It’s almost like live bait fishing,” Martin said. “It’s almost too easy.”

Overall there were 52 bass weighing 172 pounds, 13 ounces caught by co-anglers Saturday. The catch included seven five-bass limits.

The spotlight’s on Janet Parker: As the first woman with a rock-solid chance at qualifying for the Bassmaster Elite Series, Janet Parker of Little Elm, Texas, is garnering a lot of media attention.

“It’s amazing,” she said. “I’m trying to handle it with grace.”

Fishing-related print and digital media have been especially attentive. One webcast dubbed her bid “the story of the year.”

“I can’t get over how the fishing community is responding,” she said.

Parker’s chance at the Elite Series will happen at the Oct. 20-22 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open on Table Rock Lake out of Branson, Mo. As the third of three Central Opens of the 2011 season, the Missouri event will mark the finish line of the points race. Elite Series berths will be offered to the Top 5 anglers in overall points. Parker owns the No. 2 spot in points going into Table Rock, the product of a sixth-place and a 10th-place finish in the first two Central Opens of 2011.

To get where she is in points, Parker had to out-fish most of the Central Open field — twice. While several other women compete in the Central Open circuit, the field is male-dominated.

At Table Rock, she’ll have to turn in a decent performance to seal an Elite Series berth. She estimated that to stay within the Top 5 in points, she needs to finish at Table Rock in 50th place or better.

If she qualifies, Parker said she won’t let the opportunity slide to turn Elite, to make fishing history as the first woman to compete at the top level of Bassmaster competition.

She’s thought only briefly about the media spotlight that is likely to come with such an accomplishment. She witnessed the media microscope trained on Kim Bain-Moore in 2009 when Bain-Moore was the first woman to compete in a Bassmaster Classic; both fished the now-disbanded Women’s Bassmaster Tour through which Bain-Moore won her Classic qualification.

Like Bain-Moore, Parker has already shown she can handle media attention. A second-year Open competitor, who also has the experience of several other circuits since 2005, she is used to being interviewed. She makes scores of appearances each year for the charities she supports and on behalf of her sponsors, like her annual appearance at a Talladega Superspeedway event to lead the NASCAR parade with her Aaron’s Dream Machine, a Ranger-Evinrude E-TEC rig wrapped by Aaron’s, the rent-to-own retailer that’s one of her major sponsors.

Bassmaster.com will closely follow Parker’s quest to be Elite. During the Table Rock event, the website will post reports and extensive photo galleries dedicated to her bid.

Elite Series Marshal registration opens next week: Anglers who want to be a Marshal in a 2012 Bassmaster Elite Series event can sign on as early as Oct. 10.

Oct. 10 at 9 a.m. EST will mark the start of priority registration at Bassmaster.com for B.A.S.S. Federation Nation and B.A.S.S. Life members.

Starting Oct. 17 at 9 a.m. EST, Marshal registration on Bassmaster.com will be available to all B.A.S.S. members.

A Marshal in the Elite Series rides along in a competitor’s boat to serve as that angler’s official observer for the day. It’s the Marshal’s job to ensure all rules are adhered to. On the eve of the event, Marshals are randomly assigned to Elite Series anglers — to one pro for the first day, then to another for the second day of competition.

The Marshal experience is a front-row seat to watch a tournament. As observers, they not only meet pros and spend a day on the water with them, they can pick up techniques and tackle tips just by watching and asking questions (Marshals do not fish).

The cost of Marshal participation is still $100 per tournament. Details are available at the registration page on Bassmaster.com.

Shryock almost quit: Fletcher Shryock was downright discouraged at the start of the 2011 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Open season.

He considered quitting. Few would have blamed him. He finished 161st in his first event, the 2011 Southern Open on Florida’s Kissimmee Chain of Lakes.

“I originally signed up just for that first tournament,” said the 26-year-old from Newcomerstown, Ohio. “When I finished 161st, I wasn’t going to continue. I said to myself, ‘You are definitely just a normal Joe, and you need to quit wasting your money.’

“Then one of my buddies talked me into doing Lake Norman — which I won,” he said.

His prizes were cash, a boat rig he used the rest of the season, and a 2012 Bassmaster Classic berth.

So encouraged, Shryock decided to dive into the Northern Open division with the goal of qualifying for the Bassmaster Elite Series by being among the Top 5 in points after three events.

“I went into it 14th in the points. I knew it would be a long shot,” said Shryock, who raced dirt bikes from age 12 until an accident when he was 22 convinced him it was time to get out. That’s when he turned back to bass fishing, a hobby of his since he was a young kid.

After three Northern events, he had climbed into fifth place in points, exactly enough to get an invitation to join the Elite Series in 2012.

“To go from where I was in January to now — getting into the Classic and the Elite Series — is completely a dream come true,” he said.

He said he intends to join the 2012 Elite Series field, and he’s already working on making it happen. He has upgraded his boat to a bigger rig, a Ranger Z520 with a 250-hp Mercury OptiMax Pro XS. He’s working on a boat wrap deal. He’s also planning scouting trips; first on his list is the Classic fishery, the Red River out of Shreveport, La. He’s also lining up scouting trips to fisheries on the 2012 Elite Series schedule.

First up on the Elite Series trail for 2012 is a place he intends to get the best of this time around: Florida.

“I haven’t done well in Florida,” he said. “But since I was last there, I’ve become more well-rounded, learned a lot, and my confidence is high. But I know that I’ll still be learning, that there will be some ups, some downs. I’ll have to step up and do it.”

Shryock said he aims to live by something Elite Series pro Gerald Swindle once said, a comment Shryock picked up on in an online video Swindle was in.

“I’d never heard anything like it before,” Shryock said. “In my words, what he (Swindle) said was this: There are a lot of people out there who say they tried to do something. The bottom line is, a lot of people don’t know what trying is. Trying is going so hard and running yourself broke, even sleeping on the ground. That’s when you’ve tried.”

Who will win the Mercury Films Fest?: After 15 weeks of viewing fun and interesting videos submitted to the Mercury Films Festival, anglers can look forward to finding out soon who won the contest, which closed Sept. 30.

The maker of the winning video can choose as his or her prize either a Mercury engine or a fishing trip with one of the festival’s judges.

An Alaskan fishing trip will be awarded via a sweepstakes to one lucky voter who registered and voted for his or her favorite video.

CLEARLAKE, Calif. (Sept. 24, 2011) – Michael Tuck of Granite Bay, Calif., weighed a five-bass limit totaling 27 pounds, 12 ounces Saturday to win the EverStart Series Western Division event on Clear Lake with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 76 pounds, 9 ounces. For his victory, Tuck earned $29,919.

“This turned out to be a pretty good week!,” exclaimed Tuck. “I started the week with engine trouble and I really have to give a shout out to the Mercury Motor dealership in Sacramento. They got me up and running so that I could get here just in time to do a little pre-practice that enabled me to locate my fish.

“I pretty much fished the same area all week long,” Tuck continued. “I was fishing shallow grass near Rodman Slough with Little Creeper All American Trash Fish. This bait was designed to match the forage here and I really think it was key to my victory.

“Everything came together for me this week. My engine getting fixed, the water dropping which helped position the fish, my choice of baits…it was just incredible.”

Chad Leblanc of Sutter, Calif., won the Co-angler Division and a Ranger boat with an Evinrude or Mercury outboard motor with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 58-pounds, 14 ounces.

“This was just an awesome tournament,” said Leblanc. “My pros couldn’t have been better. They all gave me plenty of water to fish and let me do my thing.

‘The first two days we were fishing shallow grass, which is pretty much what I practiced for,” went on Leblanc. “Today I had to make some adjustments because my pro was fishing deep. I struggled all day, but my pro really helped me out. Told me what to do and it worked.

“Today we were fishing the main body of the lake in about 15 feet of water. I threw just about everything including Berkley Chigger Craws, Jackall Flick Shake Worms and purple RoboWorms. The first two days I was throwing mostly topwater frogs in less than a foot of water.”

Announces 2012 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Open Schedule

CELEBRATION, Fla. — B.A.S.S. LLC announced the 2012 schedule today for a three-division Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Open circuit that will hit nine bass fisheries in nine different states.

Timing on the fisheries was a top consideration in creation of the schedule — Lake Norman and Table Rock in April, and the James River in July, for example. So was geography: south to Florida, west into Texas, and north to Michigan. A fresh challenge was added with a Cayuga Lake tournament; that one is in August, perfect timing for upstate New York.

“We wanted to come up with a schedule that included a wide range of fishery types, on dates that made sense for that fishery, and with a geographical spread that made participation easier for more tournament anglers,” said Jerry McKinnis, one of three principals who purchased B.A.S.S. in late 2010. “I think we’ve come pretty close to all those goals.”

The season will kick off with a Southern Open in central Florida, Jan. 19-21 on the Harris Chain of Lakes out of Tavares. Host to more than a dozen Bassmaster events since 1986, “the Chain” was the site of the 2011 Bassmaster Elite Series opener in March. Shaw Grigsby smoked the field with a sight-fishing bonanza of 75 pounds, 4 ounces over four days. The sprawling, canal-linked lakes have produced for Open pros, too. In a 2009 Open, Day 1 leader John Kremer posted 29-13, and eventual victor Bryan Hudgins on Day 2 sacked a bag that was 1 ounce shy of 31 pounds.

Texas’ Lewisville Lake is No. 2 on the 2012 Open schedule. Lewisville was a “sleeper” stop in 2011, but pro Mark Tucker woke it up after a cold front with a catch of 45 pounds, 15 ounces over three days. The Feb. 9-11, 2012, tournament out of Lewisville, Texas, will be the first of three in the Central division.

Lake Norman out of Charlotte, N.C., will keep Southern Open anglers going April 5-7. In the 2011 Open on Norman, a 25-year-old unknown from Ohio, Fletcher Shryock, put his name up on the bass board by posting 49-9 over three days in late March. The early April dates for the 2012 event could result in similar weights.

Table Rock — a name that’s become bedrock in B.A.S.S. tournament history — will be the 2012 Central Open’s second stop on April 26-28. Like Norman and Lewisville, Table Rock is an encore from the 2011 schedule, but a 2011 Open champ from The Rock is still to come. Torrential rains in April forced a rescheduling of the 2011 Central event to Oct. 20-22. But come the 2012 Open dates in late April, there’s every chance that Table Rock will show its springtime potential for a big shallow bite and lots of limits.

The tidal James River out of Richmond, Va., will be the site of the June 14-16 Northern Open, the division’s first of 2012. The James ran gold in the 2011 Open for Kelly Pratt of Williamsburg, Va., when he won with 42-6 taken on a shallow finesse bite. But B.A.S.S. and the James go back much further. After a 1983 James River Invitational won by the legendary Hank Parker, B.A.S.S. followed with three Bassmaster Classic river events in a row, 1988-1990.

Rivers run through the 2012 schedule. Next up after the James will be Northern Open No. 2 on the Detroit River out of Detroit, Mich., July 19-21. The last time an Open was there, Todd Schmitz pulled off a come-from-way-way-behind win with 61 pounds. He keyed on the river’s deeper, cooler channel, a reliable midsummer tactic. But anglers can run to Lake St. Clair to find the cooler temps, just like the fish do.

After Detroit, Northern Open anglers can shift their attention to Cayuga Lake and Seneca Falls, N.Y., for the Aug. 16-18 Northern season finale. Cayuga is a cool, deep fishery — max depth is more than 400 feet — but the northern-end shoals area is a known haunt of largemouth bass. Cayuga also has smallmouth bass — and Northern pike, landlocked salmon, lake trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, perch, panfish and other species. Finger-slim, the fishery stretches 28 miles and up to 3 1/2 miles wide. Not huge, but big enough.

The Central Open finale takes place Sept. 6-8 on Fort Gibson Lake out of Wagoner, Okla. In 2010, Fort Gibson Lake was the site of a relocated Bassmaster Elite Series tournament. In the Elite Series tournament, pro Tommy Biffle of Wagoner capitalized on a home-lake advantage to haul in 73-11 over four mid-June days. With three days of competition, Open anglers aren’t likely to hit that mark, but a September time frame could help boost weights.

Memorable for big spotted bass and several record spots, Alabama’s Lewis Smith Lake will be the last 2012 Open destination. Smith will long be etched in pro Andy Montgomery’s memory. His win with 34 pounds, 9 ounces at the 2010 Open on Smith helped him qualify for the 2011 Bassmaster Elite Series. Hitting docks over deeper, stained water was a key to his success with spotted (and largemouth) bass in an unusually high-water situation for Smith. How the Oct. 4-6, 2012, event out of Jasper, Ala., goes for anglers should again be tied to water levels and clarity.
